The Gold Reserve Act of 1934 repriced gold to $35 overnight — a 41% devaluation of the dollar against its own definition, executed by statute. The Second World War followed, and at Bretton Woods in 1944 the $35 dollar was installed as the anchor of the entire post-war monetary order.
